Climate change is one of the most pressing priorities of the international community, and the role of education is increasingly recognized, especially with the adoption of the Paris Agreement and Action for Climate Empowerment agenda at COPs, where the call for political commitment is growing more than ever. The first-ever inter-ministerial session on climate change and education held at COP26 in Glasgow, where 27 countries pledged to increase cross-sectoral collaboration on climate action, was amplified by youth through the Conference of Youth calling upon governments to be recognized as co-creators in transforming education for green social transformation. The second inter-ministerial session on climate change education held at COP27 in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, highlighted the crucial need to embed climate change education as a core curriculum component by 2025 and created momentum in the lead-up to COP28.
Building on this, the Greening Education Partnership(GEP), launched at the UN Transforming Education Summit in September 2022, as a global initiative to deliver strong, coordinated and comprehensive action that will support countries to accelerate education responses to prepare Greening Education Partnership every learner to acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to tackle climate change and to promote sustainable development. As an open and inclusive community of practice which, to date, includes over 580 organizations and 45 Member States, the GEP aims to ‘get every learner climate-ready’ through 4 pillars of action: Greening Schools; Greening Curriculum; Greening Teacher Training, and Education System’s Capacities and Greening Communities.
Encouraged by the vision and leadership of the United Arab Emirates, the host of COP28, in placing education as a priority agenda for COP28, this first capacity building webinar is organized for the members of the GEP to share latest developments on the preparation for COP28 and to define possible ways of engagement of the GEP and its members to ensure COP28 constitutes a key milestone to reach the goal of greening education by 2030.
This webinar is organized for the members of the Partnership to:
Share updates on the ongoing development of the COP28 preparation
Exchange information on GEP members’ respective plans at COP28
