Join the UNU-IAS public symposium on the future of Japanese universities and their role in achieving the SDGs, focusing on sustainability efforts at member institutions of the UNU–SDG Universities Platform (SDG–UP).

This high-level session will bring together leaders from within and outside the Higher Ed sector to discuss the range of skills the region needs now in order to be able to transition to a sustainable economy and society, the key role the Higher Ed sector plays in providing these, and what more the sector could be doing to accelerate action.

This session will showcase examples of how Higher Ed institutions are integrating education for the SDGs, including ESD and “green skills”, into disciplinary programs and degrees, to ensure graduates and professionals have the knowledge and skills they need to help our region transition to a sustainable economy and society.

This session will explore approaches Higher Ed institutions in our region are taking to support and empower educators across the institution to integrate ESD into their teaching.

This conversation will bring us the ground realities of contextualization of SEL used as a teaching tool. It will explore the current barriers that grip using SEL as a teaching and learning tool, reflect on frameworks and practices that have shown the various pathways of using SEL for environmental education, and discuss using purposeful pedagogy, design for change and collective happiness frameworks.

Ages of Globalization by Jeffrey Sachs has been adapted into an online course to bring historical and economic insights into classrooms worldwide. This panel brings together educators, students, course designers, and funders to discuss how the course is impacting learning, its strengths and challenges, and the future of global education.

The panel will discuss the forthcoming special issue on “Policy Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development” of the Journal of Education for Sustainable Development. The aim is to garner reflections on how ESD has transitioned from policy to practice and where that will leave the world in 2030, with a focus on the powerful role of youth.
