International Forum on Education and Climate

The Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, together with the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Korea and the Salzburg Global Seminar look forward to hosting the “International Forum on Education and Climate”. 

The forum will again bring together key decision-makers and knowledge experts to exchange opinions and share best-practice examples on the role of global citizenship education (GCED) and education for sustainable development (ESD) in addressing the climate crisis. The event will allow a timely exchange on current successes and challenges and the role of education in an age of climate change.

Following the opening by BKMC Co-chairs Dr. Heinz Fischer, 11th Federal President of Austria, and H.E. Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations and H.E. Ham Sangwook, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the UN in Vienna, three panel discussions, each focusing on a unique aspect of education, will take place:  

  • “Empowering Educators for Effective Climate Education”  

This panel will discuss the role of educators in shaping learners’ understanding of climate change, the need for specialized teacher training, and overcoming challenges such as resource access and institutional support. It will showcase innovative teaching methods to enhance climate education.  

  • “Integrating Climate Education into Formal Curricula”  

Focusing on strategies for incorporating climate education into formal curricula, speakers will highlight best practices, interdisciplinary approaches, and challenges in adapting subjects to include climate-related content and greening the curriculum.   

  •  “Beyond the Classroom – Community Engagement and Climate Education” 

This panel explores the role of community-based initiatives and non-formal education settings in climate education, emphasizing partnerships, inclusivity, and the cultural relevance of climate programs across diverse communities.  

A closing ceremony with creative intervention and a call to action will conclude the forum.
