Unlearning and a Culture of Peace

  • San José Costa Rica (map)

The Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University for Peace invites you to a guest presentation on unlearning and a culture of peace with Daniel Bryan of Fundacion Pachaysana.

Within the field of peace education, much focus is given to the knowledge, skills, and values participants need to learn to foster a culture of peace, while less attention is given to what participants might need to unlearn from a culture of war, violence, and domination. In this guest conversation hosted by Dr. Stephanie Knox Steiner, we will learn from Daniel Bryan of Ecuador-based Pachaysana, which promotes education and restoration for collective liberation. Daniel will discuss Pachaysana’s approach to unlearning retreats, which are designed for educators, researchers, organizers and activists who are eager to challenge dominant paradigms, explore relational practices with nature, and reimagine education and activism through collaborative and intercultural learning.

This virtual conversation is an opportunity to learn more about Pachaysana’s work and to consider the necessity for unlearning within the broader field of peace education.
