Education for an Ecological Civilization: Lessons from the Sunshine Ecovillage in China

In this presentation, Haichao Wang, founder of the Sunshine Ecovillage in China, will share his experience of establishing an ecological academy in a thousand-year-old village in Hangzhou, China, to promote ecological civilization and ecovillage movement in the country.

Join the webinar here. No registration needed. The talk will be in Mandarin with English interpretation.

Based on Eastern wisdom tradition, the ecological academy integrates three educational concepts—education for ecology, education for lifestyle, and education for life—and provides a holistic curriculum aimed at nurturing "ecological persons" with confidence, sensitivity, and practical wisdom. Since its establishment in 2018, the academy has provided unique opportunities for young people in China to learn ecovillage designs and ways of returning to the land/countryside for a richer life experience rooted in the land and traditional culture while striving for global interconnection. The presentation will highlight three "returns to the land." The first return is to return from the city to the countryside. This involves learning self-sustaining lifestyles that restore the soil, the earth, as well as the mind and body. The second return is to return from the self-interested individuals in the economy to the land of people—people living in communities learning to connect with and shine light on each other. The third return is to return to the land of ancestors, to Eastern wisdom tradition.

This event is organized by the CIES Contemplative Inquiry and Holistic Education SIG, and co-sponsored by the AERA Holistic Education SIG, the AERA Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism SIG, and the CIES Environmental and Sustainability Education SIG.
