Global Schools is an initiative of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network that works directly with schools and educators to provide professional training and resources to support teachers and students in developing innovative sustainability solutions in school operations, activities, and learning through a network of K-12 schools in 100 countries.
Workshop description: This workshop will discuss ESD for primary learners, using intersecting cognitive issues such as climate, biodiversity, food security, clean water, and sustainable consumption. Workshop participants will be developing a learner-centered lesson plan that promotes whole-of-school action for sustainable development. Global Schools Project Officers and teachers will give example ideas of projects, simulations, and experiential activities meant to inspire and address SDGs with primary learners. By the end of the webinar, participants will be given the tools and ideas to create their own playbook full of activities that are focused on ESD themes and competencies.
Workshop Objectives:
Participants will be able to articulate and differentiate ESD competencies and pedagogies that support primary education;
Participants will consider how to integrate ESD competencies in a specific lesson plan, including cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral objectives;
Participants will begin developing their own playbook of activities that can be applied in a formal or non-formal school context.
Target audience: Primary or lower secondary educators, school leaders and ESD practitioners.
Facilitators:
Amanda Abrom (USA) is the Program Manager of Global Schools Her interests in education and student engagement stem from various roles at the US Department of State, the Chilean Ministry of Education, UNICEF’s Education Cannot Wait Fund, the UN Joint SDG Fund, the Columbia Earth Institute, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Youth Initiative), and the United Nations Association of the USA. She is a Fulbright Scholar recipient; and a NAAEE Environmental Education 30 Under 30.
Gabriela Chacon-Ugarte (Peru) is the co-president of the Latin American Student Association at Teachers College Columbia University. Her career focus is on improving teacher quality in her native Peru. She first developed standardized teacher evaluation tools at the Ministry of Education and then worked as a technical advisor for the design, strategic planning, and policy implementation of the Initial Teacher Education and Teacher Evaluation departments at the same institution.
Santha Nair (Malaysia) is a Project Officer (Partnerships & Events) at the Global Schools Program. She is also an English Teacher at a vernacular school in Perak, Malaysia. She is the Head of Department for English and Art and one of the master trainers for the CEFR English curriculum in the Lower Perak district. She is also the Program Manager and Co-Founder of Deria, where she spearheaded the Environmental Education Playbook.
