GEP Working Group 3: Greening Teacher Training and Education Systems' Capacities

The Greening Education Partnership is an open and inclusive community of practice of Member States, organizations and institutions for promoting, implementing and enabling getting every learner climate-ready.

Taking a lifelong learning approach starting from pre-primary to adult education, the Greening Education Partnership encourages countries and key stakeholders to focus on 4 action areas:

  • Greening Schools to ensure a whole-institution approach, including greening teaching and learning, climate-ready school facilities and operations, inclusive governance, and community engagement.

  • Greening Curriculum to ensure relevant and quality of learning content and pedagogy on climate change education.

  • Greening Teacher Training and Education Systems' Capacities to strengthen policy, planning, finance, and implementation.

  • Greening Communities to become climate resilient through lifelong learning.

A working group is set up for each of the four pillars. In April 2023, the partnership convened the first meeting of each of the four working groups with stakeholders from over 400 organizations that have joined the Partnership. The meeting was held to elaborate the terms of reference for the working groups for each pillar and define possible ways of engagement and synergies while drawing on each partner's areas of expertise.

During this second working group meeting, member states and key stakeholders that have joined the Partnership will convene to discuss workplans for each of the working groups, share updates on ongoing and planned Partnership activities and explore ways to collaborate and engage member states.

Pillar 3: Greening Teacher Training and Education Systems' Capacities to strengthen policy, planning, finance, and implementation

Strengthen education systems to be climate-smart with adequate measures to advance climate resilience, decarbonize the education footprint, and support students’ acquirement of skills, values and knowledge for greener and more sustainable societies. In order to do this, it is critical to ensure that teachers, education support personnel and policymakers alike have the capacity to deliver quality climate change education. This includes system-level capacity to advance policy, planning, financing, and the school-level capacity of teachers, educators, and the wider education workforce. All countries should aim to transform their education systems to become climate-resilient and sustainable.

This will require enhanced support for ministries of education to integrate climate change and sustainability considerations into education strategies, plans, data and budgets, as well as improved cross-sectoral coordination with ministries responsible for climate and environment policy and action. A focus on climate change and sustainability should be included in initial teacher training programmes for teachers across subjects and levels. Quality professional development opportunities to enhance readiness to educate for climate action should be provided for the entire education workforce, including school leaders, teachers, educators and education support personnel at all levels of education, including early childhood, primary, secondary, TVET and tertiary education. Training should also be provided to educators and trainers in relevant fields such as environment, energy, and agriculture. Furthermore, these efforts should be facilitated by enabling the system and institutional-level conditions. This includes having the funding, tools, time, trust, support and employment conditions to provide quality climate education for all. This will support the acquisition of skills required for the green transition in 2030.

This meeting specifically targets the organizations/institutions and member states that have joined the Partnership. It aims to:

  • Co-create a joint work plan that will formulate the activities to be undertaken by the working group members;

  • Share information about ongoing and planned activities; and

  • Explore ways to collaborate and engage member states.
