Policy Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development: Launch of the JESD Special Issue

Join the UNESCO Chair in International Education for Development and the SDG Academy in celebrating Earth Day with the launch of the Journal of Education for Sustainable Development (JESD) special issue on "Policy Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development."

Register now.

As the world reflects on the momentum of the Summit of the Future and the remaining five years of the SDG timeline, we find a moment to reflect on the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and its emerging tensions and opportunities. Although ESD has become a priority in national education policies, and is cited as a key driver to the UN’s global development agenda, what progress has been made in moving the world towards sustainable development? Have policies adequately transitioned to practice? A new special issue of the JESD explores the nuance of the policy-practice continuum in relation to ESD and whether or not we are progressing towards global goals in effective, efficient, and transformative ways.

This special issue–in partnership with the SDG Academy at the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Columbia University, and York University–seeks to offer reflections along these lines. Representing scholars in 9 countries from over 21 institutions, the special issue offers suggestions for pathways forward, in addition to serving as a space for debate related to ESD priorities and plans for implementation, particularly within the framework of the SDGs. It will take a critical view of the manner and method in which ESD has been pursued across an array of contexts and will reflect on best practices or shared principles.

This webinar serves as the launch event for the publication. Speakers will discuss their contributions and inspire dialogue with a wider community about the successes, challenges, and opportunities for policy related to ESD.
